#Exclusive| I have added several fun elements to the Neerja brothel owner character Didun- Kamya Punjabi.

By Anil Merani| Kamya Punjabi is a well-known name in the TV circuit. She has done several shows over two decades, making a niche for herself as a character artist.

Kamya, who has remarried, is next featuring as a brothel madam in Star Plus’s new show Neerja-  Ek Nayi Pehchaan, also starring  Sneha Wagh and Ayub Khan.

We caught up with Kamya for a quick chat on the character at the sideline of the launch press conference of the above Sudhir Sharma production.

Starting with Neerja’s concept, Kamya says, “Several shows and movies have been made before on giving societal respect and equality to currently ostracized sex workers, hoping our labour of love becomes the first step. They, too, deserve their place under the sun and economic power.”

Kamya has added several fun elements to the character “Didun is not just an angry brothel owner but has lots of grace; she laughs and makes others laugh and cry, but she never weeps. So far, the team has liked her and hopes you guys also shower your love.”

Kamya has added much of her personality to the costumes;” my shoes, nose ring, and jewellery. I always use my jewellery to add my imprint to the character,” added she

“I hope this show beats all my previous shows (Reth, Astitva…Ek Prem Kahani and Banoo Mein Teri Dulhann.) and becomes a super hit

Talking about the daily shoot( Mon to Sunday,) she said, “I have not done this type of show before, but we will not shoot more than twelve hours being more organized. Also, we have two families dividing the work. “

Kamya likes the new lead cast of Neerja, “Aastha Sharma and Rajveer Singh are very hardworking, and their onscreen chemistry should rock—the entire cast also is excellent. We seldom have such a bevvy of talent like Vibha Chibber and Ayub Khan. I am looking forward to scenes with them.”

Since you play a lot of intensive scenes, do you carry emotions home?” No, being an actor, once the wig and jewellery are out, I am back to being Kamya. I never take them back home. At times when the EQ(emotional quotient) is too heavy, it takes a while to snap out of it as we, too, are humans.” ended she
