Review
Before delving into the review, let us warn you that if you are expecting a medical drama with heart pounding situations and saving lives, then you will be highly disappointed. But on the other hand, if you are a fan of family drama along with some comedy thrown here and there for entertainment then you might like this drama.
“Dr.Cha” started off well as Cha Jung Sook bravely marches forward to perceive her goal and happiness after slaving away for the past 20 years of her life.Uhm Jung Hwa as Cha Jung Sook was perfect for the role and she did justice to her given character. The way she took control of her life and rebelled against her husband and ungrateful mother in law was hilarious as well as deserves an applause. As a first year resident at the age of 46, she was compassionate but also clumsy, forgetful which made it quite realistic. After realizing that her husband has been cheating on her and also has a daughter, the same age as her own, she portrayed the feeling of betrayal and emotions well making the audience connect with her.
Kim Byung Chul as Seo In Ho , Chief surgeon of university hospital and the husband of Cha Jung Sook deserves special mention as he was the main entertainment factor in the otherwise monotonous drama. His expressions were comical and his character was so unique that you will both love and hate to see him onscreen depending on the situation. To be precise, Seo In Ho is a scumbag who neither loves nor respects his wife.He is also cowardly and selfish enough to keep his affair with Choi Sung Hee (Myung Se Bin) ongoing despite his family finding out.He even has the audacity to be jealous of his wife and Dr.Roy Kim (Min Woo Hyuk) the surgeon who operated on his wife and a colleague.Although Seo In Ho is quite the character who deserves hatred, we can’t quite hate him as he is just hilarious and shameless instead of mean and villainous.
The other characters that is worth mentioning is Choi Sung Hee played by Myung Se Bin.Although she is a home wrecker, she is also a victim and not to be entirely blamed for the affair. Min Woo Hyuk as Dr.Roy Kim, who stood by Dr.Cha and respected her enough to wait before confessing his feelings for her. The mother in law was hilarious as a high maintenance nitpicking woman.
What Worked For Dr.Cha
Despite the drama being overly melodramatic with family issues, “Dr.Cha” does have its moments. The fact that Cha Jung Sook took the step forward to shake off her family shackles and pursued her dreams while also being a loving mother and a dutiful daughter in law is commendable. The show delivers the importance of living your own life and being responsible for your own happiness.
What Did Not Work
Although “Dr.Cha” was initially quite hilarious and fun to watch Dr.Cha Jung Sook as the fumbling but passionate resident and Seo In Ho as the adulterer and jealous husband, it took a nose dive from there and ended up being an emotional drama with nothing more to offer.
Despite the entire drama taking place in the hospital as all the main roles are working in the same place, the drama failed to connect with the audience in the medical aspect. It would have been more interesting if they focused more on Dr.Cha’s learning experience of being a doctor than on her personal problems.
The affair of Seo In Ho and Choi Seung Hee took predominance in the show although their affair was revealed to the audience from the very first episode. The show lost its focus and concentrated more on the family affairs losing its pace. The last few episodes were a complete drag and monotonous that makes us forget what made us like the show in the first place.
Final Verdict
All in all “Dr.Cha” is a melodrama set in the background of an hospital and deals with the problems of the main leads than on the patients.
