By Anil Merani: This morning, the news of an intruder in Saif Ali Khan’s 11th-floor apartment has sent shockwaves through Mumbai. If a top-notch actor living in a supposedly secure gated community can be targeted, it raises serious questions about the safety of all residents, even those in supposedly more secure towers.

The attack last night was a display of meticulous planning. The intruder knew the weak spots in the CCTV coverage, allowing him to reach the fire escape hatch and climb to the 11th floor. The fact that the boundary wall was unfenced and the fire escape hatch was unlocked only added to the severity of the security breach.

All this indicates an inside job. The cops, too, think along the same line. No wonder they have detained three staff members

The cops will scour the CCTV footage and grill the apartment security about such a significant intrusion.

It’s alarming to note that the intruder was able to argue with Saif’s maid without any personal security detail intervening. This incident underscores the urgent need for high net-worth individuals to have personal security details inside their apartments.

Another glaring question: why did Ibrahim carry his father Saif in an auto to Lilavati Hospital? I am sure the family must have a fleet of cars with 24*7 drivers on-site.

A comprehensive investigation will be crucial in understanding what went wrong and preventing such incidents in the future. This should provide some reassurance to the public.

While there will undoubtedly be a push for all apartments to upgrade their security measures, the reality is that this will require a significant investment. The question then becomes, will individual society members be willing to increase their maintenance bills to ensure their safety?

Instead, HNI individuals should invest in private security, providing an inner ring of protection over and above shared apartment security.
