Plot of the Movie Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is a movie based on the real-life story of a girl who aspires to be a pilot. She ultimately succeeds in her dream of becoming a pilot, and that too with the Indian Air Force in the combat role. The name Gunjan Saxena used in the movie is the real name of the girl who participated in the 1999 Kargil War, a war fought between India and Pakistan. She happens to be the first woman to fly in a combat zone.

The role of Gunjan Saxena was played by Janhvi Kapoor, who did complete justice with her role and justified the director in casting her in the movie. The story starts in 1984 in Lucknow when Gunjan flew somewhere in a flight with her brother Anshuman. During the flight, she wanted to look out of the airplane, but her brother didn’t let her. An air hostess saw them fighting and she solved the problem by taking Gunjan to the cockpit. Seeing the cockpit, Gunjan got excited and decided to become a pilot.

From then on, Gunjan decided to become a pilot, and she was a brilliant student. A few years later, her parents wanted to send her to high school, but Gunjan had other plans and wanted to drop out to become a pilot. She wanted to fly an airplane like you see in the Aviator game, which can be played at aviator-thegame.com

When Gunjan told her parents that she wanted to drop out of high school to become a pilot, her brother Anshuman felt that women should not be in the cockpit but in the kitchen. Their father disagrees with Anshuman, as he’s a firm believer in gender equality and allows Gunjan to try to become a pilot. She made multiple attempts but was unsuccessful due to constraints like educational qualification and high costs.

Gunjan’s Entry into the Indian Air Force

After failing in the initial attempts to become a pilot, Gunjan had a chance to become a Pilot when an advertisement to enter the Indian Air Force was published in the newspapers. This was the right opportunity for Gunjan to enter the Indian Air Force and fulfill her dream of becoming a pilot and flying an airplane. She filled out the form, and during the medical tests for the same, it was found that she is one centimeter short and seven kilograms overweight according to the Indian Air Force requirements.

She was broken down with this news, but later learns that she can take a retest in two weeks and lose the extra kilograms, but still falls short of the height criterion. But the officers conclude that the length of her hands and legs would compensate for the height criterion and accept her into the Indian Air Force. This was the first successful step to fulfill her dream of becoming a pilot.

Gunjan’s parents were proud of her achievement, but her brother was still critical of her dedication. Gunjan ignores her brother’s reservations and commences training, where she faces the harsh reality of the training, and the idea of leaving the camp comes to her mind. Her actual opportunity to serve the nation came during the Kargil War, when the Indian Air Force needed all Air Force pilots. She took part in the Kargil War and saved the lives of many soldiers, and made herself and the nation proud.

Conclusion: This is all about the movie Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, who was the first Indian woman to serve in the Indian Air Force in a combat role. She inspired many generations of Indians, especially females, to become a part of India’s defense services. After her success in the Air Force, many other females were influenced to become pilots, and now India has more women in the defense services, especially in the combat role, than previously.
