The episode starts with a family praying to God, a girl named Megha asks her father if they came here to take blessings for her younger sister who is yet to be born. He smiles and nods. He prays for the baby’s health whether it is boy or girl.
His mother says boy can be anyway but if its girl, she has to be pretty, otherwise father’s shoulders will be burdened. His wife gets labor pains and few ladies do her delivery. A beautiful girl is born. Her grandmother gets happy and names her Mayura.
A function is organized for baby, her grandmother scolds a man for using oil, she tells to use only desi ghee and boasts of Mayura’s beauty. Few guests gossip about Mayura’s beauty, a lady says she will bring trouble to their colony as she grows up, one shouldn’t be too beautiful. Mayura’s parents worry seeing their mother boasting about Mayura’s beauty. They fear Megha will feel inferior, she says it is difficult being a girl and its more difficult to be a beautiful girl. Beauty can become curse rather than blessing. She fears Mayura’s beauty becoming her cage.
Mayura grows up to be a beautiful woman. She frees birds from cages and says birds may look beautiful in cage but they are not happy. She says they have to fly, beauty doesn’t mean happiness, but happy people are always beautiful. As she walks, some boys comment badly, ladies gossip that if she roams like this, boys will obviously follow behind. She goes to college and her grandma calls her and asks if she applied sunscreen.
She lies that she applied and cuts the call saying network is poor. She goes to classroom and takes her mark sheet. She goes to her professor as she got 100 marks even though she left a question unattempted. He slyly says he gave extra marks for beautiful handwriting. He misbehaves with her. She leaves the room crying. Her classmates taunt her that she got marks by going to professor room and she will cure patients by just smiling.
She comes home and applies sunscreen to avoid her grandma rants and also to hide her sadness from her father. She sees many writings on their car like ‘love mayura’ and heart symbols, she erases them. She asks her mother for tea but her grandmother stops her from drinking tea as she will become dark by drinking black tea. She says she can’t fool her and asks if she applied sunscreen just now. She says they will save her from evil eyes but she has to make place in rightful ones. Her father can’t give dowry for two girls.
Megha is trying many creams and Mayura is not at all putting efforts. Mayura’s father comes to handle situation as his wife messaged him. He tells Mayura to listen to her grandmother but she she says she won’t listen, she doesn’t want to be beautiful. She asks if they would have left her in ghat hadn’t she born beautiful. She just wants to be their daughter, not beautiful daughter.
Mayura’s father asks her to apply dye to his hair. He says she is their daughter whether she is black or white. He understands what she feels daily by blank calls, girls jealous comments, boys friend requests. He is proud of her honesty and for never using beauty to her advantage.
She hears phone ringing and goes to lift it, but her sister lifts it and talks to her uncle about the usual failed match making. Mayura tries to console her sister but she vents out her sadness, rejected marriage proposals, she says its difficult to be sister to beautiful girl. She says she got her grandmother’s color and Mayura got her mother’s color.
Mayura goes to ghat and wonders if anyone will ever see her nature and free her from this cage. A guy is shown dipping in water. Ppl chant sangmarmar sartaaj.
